Supreme Court to decide on motion for disqualification of presiding judge in Sanader case

Zagreb County Court Judge Ivan Turudic said on Tuesday that the motion by the defence team representing former Prime Minister Ivo Sanader in the Hypo Bank and INA-MOL corruption cases to disqualify him from the retrial of their client would be decided by the Supreme Court.
Sanader’s lawyers Cedo Prodanovic and Jadranka Slokovic said that Judge Turudic had accepted their earlier proposal and that the motion for disqualification would be decided by a higher court. They added that the Supreme Court would decide on disqualifying Judge Turudic both as presiding judge of the trial chamber and president of the Zagreb County Court.
In its initial verdict, the trial chamber presided over by Judge Turudic  had found Sanader guilty of war profiteering and bribe-taking in the two cases and the verdict was recently quashed by the Constitutional Court. Sanader’s lawyers said they were doubtful about Turudic being impartial at the retrial.
