Maldivian vice president arrested in connection with speedboat blast

Colombo (dpa) – Police arrested the vice president of the Maldives Saturday for his alleged involvement in last month’s explosion on a speedboat in which the country’s president was travelling with his wife, a senior police officer said.

Ahmed Adeeb was arrested soon after landing at the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport upon his return from a visit to China and has been taken for questioning, police spokesman Ismail Ali said.

President Yameen Abdul Gayoom escaped unhurt from the September 28 explosion, but his wife was injured. They were caught in the explosion while returning to the capital from the airport following a haj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.

The arrest came after investigations which included support from the United States, Saudi Arabia and Sri Lanka.

On Friday, the vice president denied involvement in the explosion.

Security has been tightened in the capital, Male, to prevent any protests related to the arrest.
