Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic met with Qatar’s Ambassador Sheikha Moza bint Nasser bin Ahmed Ali Al-Thani at the Opatovac refugee reception centre, eastern Croatia on Wednesday.
Ostojic informed his guest about everything Croatia was doing regarding the reception and transit of refugees and migrants to their destinations in western and northern Europe.
“Qatar has responded within a very short period of time to our appeal for aid in tents and other equipment for the winter transit centre. They have sent a plane with 50 tonnes of top-quality equipment. The government of Qatar sent it within a space of 72 hours and the equipment is already stored in Slavonski Brod and ready for distribution,” Ostojic told the press, adding that the tents can hold about 3,000 people.
“What is most important is that a friendly government immediately responded to our call for help, without any questions,” he noted.
Croatia is preparing a winter transit centre for refugees and migrants in Slavonski Brod, about 200km east of Zagreb.
The number of refugees and migrants who have entered Croatia since mid-September reached 174,616 by 7pm on Wednesday.
