Serbia sends Croatia protest note over border incident

The Serbian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday sent a protest note to Croatian Ambassador in Belgrade Gordan Markotic over an incident in the area of the Berkasovo-Bapska border crossing on Monday.

On that occasion, a number of Croatian police officers crossed into Serbian territory and used force on journalists who were reporting on events in the area, which was a breach of Serbia’s territorial integrity, the ministry said in a press release.

Serbian authorities are willing to share with Croatia all information relevant to the incident, confident that something similar will not happen again, the press release said.

Serbian Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic said on Monday that Serbia would send a protest note to Croatia because a number of Croatian police officers had entered Serbian territory near the Berkasovo border crossing, assaulting journalists who were reporting on the migrant crisis. He condemned the entry in the strongest terms, saying it was a threat against Serbia’s territorial sovereignty.

Croatian Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic said on Monday that Croatian police had not entered Serbian territory.
