Sydney (dpa) – If you’re looking for solitude and have nearly 4 million US dollars to hand, then an island off the coast of Tasmania could be the place for you.
Waterhouse Island, three kilometres from mainland Tasmania, is on sale freehold for 5.5 million Australian dollars (3.87 million US dollars).
Covering 287 hectare, the island was used as grazing land for sheep for more than 100 years, but has been a family getaway and therefore off the market for about the last 45 years.
“The east coast is sheltered from the wind and has sandy beaches, clear water, a functioning wharf and a four bedroom house,” real estate agent Ant Manton said, adding that it would be marketed to international as well as domestic buyers.
The house and a nearby cottage run on solar power.
Access to the island is by boat from the mainland or by light plane to land on one of two airstrips.
