Two teens held for rape of toddler in New Delhi

Two teenage boys have been arrested for allegedly raping a toddler in New Delhi, police said Sunday, in a case which has caused widespread outrage.

Senior police officer Dependra Pathak said the suspects, about 17 years old, were arrested in a western part of the city where the child aged 2 was raped and dumped in a park on Friday night.

“More than 20 teams were formed and almost 260 suspects were interrogated. Finally, late on Saturday night we apprehended the juveniles behind the deplorable act,” Pathak told a news conference.

The arrests were made based on video footage obtained from security cameras near the victim’s home.

In another incident, police arrested three men on Saturday for raping a 5 year old in eastern Delhi.

The brutal sexual assaults, coming after the rape and torture of a 4-year-old girl in New Delhi, triggered fresh outrage in the city.

On Sunday, demonstrators in Delhi blamed the government and police for failing to ensure safety of girls and women in the city.

Sexual violence in India has come under intense domestic and international scrutiny after several high-profile cases in recent years.
