Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic said on Wednesday after the Brdo-Brijuni summit that Europe’s southeast was no longer a region which was being talked about somewhere else but a region with which talks were being held.

Grabar-Kitarovic said she was encouraged by the commitment of all the participants in today’s meeting, notably the guests of honour, “the promotion of and support for Euro-Atlantic integration processes in countries included in the Brdo-Brijuni Process.”

“I believe we have just committed ourselves to achieving the strategic vision of Europe which is whole, free and peaceful and which is not integral without its southeast,” said the president and called on everyone to stop using the term Western Balkans and start calling this region by the name that truly described it – Southeast Europe.

Commenting on the latest global developments, Grabar-Kitarovic said this was a watershed moment for Europe, NATO and the global community because of security challenges, terrorism, extremism and radicalism.

“As leaders, we sent out a message from Zagreb that we can do more by advancing our dialogue and cooperation at all levels. To achieve permanent stability of the entire Europe, it is necessary to secure stability and prosperity in Europe’s southeast. And for that we need strong partners and allies” the Croatian president said.

In her opinion, this can be done through stronger dialogue between this region, the EU and the United States.

She also said she was confident the United States would get more involved in the political life of Bosnia and Herzegovina and that the 20th anniversary of the Dayton Accord was a good moment to consider what had been done so far and how to move on.
