Croatia’s registered unemployment rate increased in October for the second consecutive month, from 16.2 per cent in September to 17.2 per cent, according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (DZS) on Monday.

After six months of uninterrupted decline, mostly thanks to seasonal hiring in the tourist industry, unemployment has been on the rise again since September. However, compared with October 2014, when it reached 18.6 per cent, the unemployment rate in October 2015 was 1.4 percentage points lower.

The rise in unemployment was expected after figures released by the National Employment Service (HZZ) earlier showed that the number of the jobless in October, compared with September, had increased by 6.3 per cent to 275,800 people.

The latest figures show unemployment has continued to grow in November as well. The current number of job-seekers registered with the HZZ is 283,000, or 7,200 more than at the end of October.
