A man jumped over the fence and onto the White House lawn on Thursday while US President Barack Obama and his family were at home for the Thanksgiving holiday, the Secret Service said.
The Secret Service identified the man as Joseph Caputo. He scaled the complex’s north fence at 2:45 pm (1945 GMT) and was immediately arrested, spokesman Robert Hoback said.
Criminal charges were pending and the Secret Service temporarily closed parts of the grounds, Hoback said.
Photos broadcast on CNN showed a man wrapped in a US flag scaling the fence that surrounds the complex.
Security at the White House has been beefed up in recent months after a high profile incident that saw another man successfully jump the fence and make it inside the building with a knife.
Former Secret Service director Julia Pierson was forced to resign last year amid a series of security breaches the occurred both at the executive mansion and on Obama’s trips.
The Obamas had spent Thanksgiving at the White House for a traditional meal that included roast turkey, ham, cranberry relish, cornbread stuffing and other traditional dishes.
