Myanmar’s incumbent President Thein Sein promised to respect the result of Sunday’s election no matter the outcome.
In a nationally televised speech late Friday, Thein Sein said that the armed forces and his Union Solidarity and Development Party were “prepared to accept the result of a free and fair election.”
“I understand there is concern over the acceptance of the results,” he said.
Sunday’s election is the first time since 1990 that all major parties have contested a poll in Myanmar.
Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy won the 1990 polls, but the results were annulled by the military.
