Schools and colleges were closed in the southern state of Tamil Nadu and its waterlogged capital Chennai Monday as rains continued to pound the region, Indian officials and news reports said.

The death toll in rain-related incidents in the state over the past week rose to 60, with most due to wall collapses, drowning and electrocution, NDTV news channel reported.

Very heavy rain was expected in the northern coastal districts of the state over the next day and half, regional meteorological office director SR Raman said by telephone.

The rains were due to a low-pressure system over the adjoining Bay of Bengal, the national Metereological Department said.

Schools and colleges in Chennai and adjoining Kancheepuram district were closed till further notice, NDTV reported, with several areas of the state capital waist-deep in water.
