Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta will resign, the president of his Socialist Party PSD, Liviu Dragnea, told state television Wednesday.
Ponta, 43, has come under pressure from protests related to the government reaction to a weekend nightclub blaze that left 32 dead. Tens of thousands took to the streets Tuesday demanding his resignation.
Romanians largely blame the problems that led to the blaze on official corruption.
Ponta is also faced with a corruption trial. On that front, he was only saved from a humiliating arrest when parliament refused to revoke his immunity, as requested by prosecutors.
