UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon appointed Michael Keating of Britain as the new head of the UN assistance mission to Somalia, Ban’s spokesman said Monday.
Keating will succeed fellow British diplomat Nicholas Kay, who is set to finish his mandate at the end of the year after more than two years in the post.
Keating has worked with peace-building and humanitarian programmes in Afghanistan, the Middle East and Africa. Most recently, he has served as senior advisor to the UN envoy on Syria.
Ban thanked Kay for his “dedication, courage and excellent leadership,” noting that his time in the position has marked “a critical period for Somalia’s political transformation.”
