– A recent cyber attack on Australian government computers was instigated by China, an official was quoted as saying Wednesday.
The attack on the Bureau of Meteorology also compromised sensitive defence and security systems, broadcaster ABC cited government sources as saying.
One official estimated it would take years to repair the damage as the weather forecasting system could not be switched off, and is linked into several other agencies including the Department of Defence.
The Australian government has not commented publicly on the cyber attack, but the ABC quoted an unnamed official saying “it’s China.”
The bureau has developed beyond simple weather forecasting to become key in planning defence strategies and environmental programs in the face of climate change.
