Austria decided on Wednesday to limit the number of refugees and migrants arriving via Slovenia, after which Slovenian Foreign Minister Karl Erjavec said that the Slovenian government would decide on steps to be taken on its border with Croatia on Thursday.

“The government will decide on that on Thursday and one possibility is to define a limit on the intake of migrants from Croatia. We will have to adapt to what Austria does,” Erjavec said, adding that the Slovenian government was in close contact with the Austrian authorities.

Austria decided to allow in only refugees who can provide proof of their identity, those who intend to apply for asylum in Austria or Germany, and people without a criminal record or those who do not pose a security risk. The number of asylum seekers to be admitted by 2019 would be restricted to no more than 1.5 per cent of the country’s population.

The Austrian government decided to restrict the number of asylum claims to 37,500 this year and to a total of 127,5000 by mid-2019.

The measures agreed will apply as of next month and the separation of refugees from economic migrants began already today.
