Wartime Serb paramilitary commander Dragan Vasiljkovic, also known as Captain Dragan, who is awaiting trial at Split County Court for war crimes committed in Croatia in the early 1990s, wants to be defended by a lawyer from Serbia, media in Belgrade said on Sunday.

Belgrade lawyer Dragan Palibrk confirmed that he had visited Vasiljkovic, at his request, in his detention cell in Split last week. After discussing the preparation of the defence case, they agreed that Palibrk would join the existing defence team of Croatian lawyers Sladjana Cankovic and Luka Susak.

The Split County Prosecutor’s Office issued an indictment against Vasiljkovic on January 8, charging him with war crimes against prisoners of war and civilians.

The Split County Court is to decide in the coming days whether to allow the Serbian lawyer to join the defence team.
