Syria aid conference to be held in London, Croatia promises EUR1mln

Over 70 countries, including Croatia, and international organisations will take part in a Syria Donors Conference, scheduled for Thursday in London, and the conference, co-organised by United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, Kuwait and the United Nations – is expected to raise a billion euros for the war-stricken Middle East country.

The European Union is set to promise some 2 billion euros, and a large part of this sum is likely to be earmarked for Syrian refugees who have found shelter in neighbouring countries.

“We need to ensure that all Syria’s neighbours are supported,” an EU official said, referring to Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq.

Croatia will be represented at the London conference by President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic.

She will inform the conference of Croatia’s readiness to allocate a million euros in aid to Syria over the next four years, in compliance with a decision adopted by the government on 28 January,

U.N. agencies are appealing for slightly below eight billion dollars to cope with Syria’s needs this year with an additional USD 1.2 billion required by regional governments for their own plans to deal with the impact of Syria’s conflict.
