Pope Francis on Sunday deeply afflicted after the assassination in Paris and warned that resorting to violence in God's name "blasphemy".

"It leaves us so cruel that we can not understand the human heart and accept such terrible events that have shaken not only France, but the entire world," said Pope Francis during the angelus at St. Peter in Rome.

"Faced with such feats, we can only condemn the most insulting dignity of man," the Pope added.

"I want to confirm that hate and violence does not address the problems of mankind, and the use of God's name to justify such a blow is," he said.

Pope Francis prayed that in the hearts of all the generations of wise thoughts and paths of peace, he invited thousands of gathered believers to spend a few moments with him in silence.
