Germany is prepared to send multi-purpose Tornado fighter planes to join allied forces in fighting the Islamic State in Syria, the German news agency DPA says from government sources after German Chancellor Angela Merkel and key ministers meet.

The German Chancellor promised in Paris on Wednesday that it would "act quickly" to respond to France's President Francois Hollande's request to "think about additional tasks" that Germany could take in the fight against terrorism.

"The President's call to consider the additional tasks we can take for me is a real challenge and we will react quickly," Merkel said in a joint statement to reporters.

"I would like Germany to be more involved in the fight with DAESH (IS) in Syria and Iraq," said former French President in the company of German Chancellor.

"It is necessary to fight military equipment against the Islamic State," Merkel said on Wednesday evening in Paris, ahead of a working dinner with French President Francois Hollande.
