In 2015. More than a million tourists visited the city of Zagreb. The capital of the Republic of Croatia has recorded a steady increase in the number of visitors in recent years, and in order to continue this trend, the city's tourist offer is actively developing and advancing. The best example is the modernization project of the Zoological Gardens, one of the main symbols of the city that has been at the top of the tourist offer not only in Zagreb, but throughout Croatia.

The Renewed Zoo has finally opened its doors, and on Wednesday, 28. September 2016. the presentation of the completion and results of the project "Modernization of the Zoo in Zagreb - the first phase" was co-funded with 35.960.675,88 kuna from the European Union funds, while its total value is 37.853.343,04 kuna.

A ceremony was attended by the Minister of Regional Development and European Union funds Tomislav ToluĹĄiÄ , mayor of the City of Zagreb Milan Bandic, Director of the Central Finance and Contracting Agency for EU Projects and Programs (SAFU) Tomislav Petric, Director of Institutions Zoo of the City of Zagreb Damir Skok and Chairman of the Steering Council and Project Leadership Leader Ratko Maričić.

Realizing the project aims to increase the attractiveness and diversity of the Zoological Gardens and raise the number of annual visitors with 260 000 to 350 000. It is also expected to increase the educational capacity of Vrta and the number of attendees of various education and raise the quality and sustainability of the protected area Maksimir Park where ZOO is located.

There is also a new main entrance for visitors to the info center as well as two new walking bridges.

Within the framework of the project, it was very important to please the inhabitants of the Zoological Garden - animals. In addition to providing adequate accommodation space, the construction of a volcano for African birds and pelagic homes will additionally contribute to the attractiveness of the Vrta.
